When we talk about recovering from family violence, we often use words like “moving on” or “getting over it.” But for those of us on the frontline, we know those terms don’t quite fit the reality. Healing isn’t a straight line; it’s a craft.
In Te Ao Māori, the Korowai (prestige cloak) is a symbol of protection and dignity. But a Korowai isn’t made overnight. It is the result of months—sometimes years—of preparation, patience, and the careful selection of threads.
At Staying Safe and Sane, we believe that healing from family harm is exactly like weaving a Korowai.
The Unraveling
Family violence is an “unraveling.” It pulls at the threads of your confidence, your legal rights, your physical safety, and your mental health until the fabric of your life feels like it’s falling apart. When you are in the middle of that unraveling, the world feels “insane.”
You cannot simply knot those broken pieces back together and expect them to hold. You have to start with the muka—the raw fiber—and weave something new.
The Right Threads
To weave a life that stays safe, you need the right materials. This is why our Advisory Board—our Whare Pora (House of Weaving)—consists of four specific specialists. We don’t believe in “one size fits all” advice. We believe in high-quality threads:
- The Thread of Healing (Clinical Psychology): To stabilize the nervous system and heal the heart.
- The Thread of Advocacy (Social Work): To navigate the practical systems of housing and support.
- The Thread of Protection (Corrections): To identify red flags and manage real-world risk.
- The Thread of Strategy (The Law): To ensure the pattern of your life is protected by the Family Violence Act.
Patience in the Process
If you try to weave too fast, the tension breaks the thread. If you use the wrong material, the cloak won’t protect you from the cold.
We want our whānau and our community to know that it is okay to take your time. It is okay to seek the best “weavers” to help you. Whether you are a survivor looking for a path forward, a family member wanting to support a loved one, or an employer looking out for your team—the tools are here.
Join the Whare
We invite you to explore our website and meet the people behind the plan. We aren’t here to tell you how to live; we are here to provide the loom and the threads.
Together, we can weave a future where every member of our whānau is wrapped in a cloak of safety, dignity, and sanity.
