The first 30 days after leaving or deciding to change your life are about stabilization. Your brain is moving from “Survival Mode” to “Safety Mode,” which can feel like an emotional rollercoaster.
In Aotearoa, we use the Te Whare Tapa Whā model to ensure your healing is balanced across all areas of your life.
Week 1: Physical & Immediate Safety (Te Taha Tinana)
Your goal this week is to lower your cortisol and secure your perimeter.
- The Workplace Pivot: If you are employed, apply for your 10 days of paid Family Violence Leave. This gives you the time to breathe without financial panic.
- The Digital Sweep: Change every password, factory reset your phone, and set up your Poste Restante at the local PostShop.
- The Protection Order: If you haven’t already, speak to a lawyer or a police advocate about an interim Protection Order. In NZ, these can often be granted “without notice” within 24 hours.
Week 2: Securing Your Foundations (Te Taha Whānau)
Now that you are physically safe, we look at the logistics of your new life.
- The WINZ Connection: Even if you’ve never used them before, book a “Transition to Safety” appointment. Ask for the one-off grant to help with moving costs or new essentials.
- The School/Daycare Update: If you have tamariki (children), give their school a copy of your safety plan. Explicitly state who is (and isn’t) allowed to pick them up.
- The Banking Separation: Meet with your bank’s Financial Vulnerability Team to ensure your accounts are de-linked and your new address is masked.
Week 3: Managing the “Thaw” (Te Taha Hinengaro)
This is often when the “adrenaline” wears off and the “heaviness” sets in. This is normal.
- The Professional Anchor: Contact ACC Sensitive Claims (if applicable) or find a trauma-informed therapist.
- The “No-Contact” Wall: You may feel the urge to “check in” on the abuser or explain yourself. Don’t. Block the numbers, or have a trusted friend screen your messages.
- Sensory Grounding: Focus on your Body Safety Plan. Use your weighted blankets, your favorite scents, and your “Safe Seat” at home.
Week 4: Reclaiming Your Spirit (Te Taha Wairua)
You are moving from “Survivor” to “Self.”
- The Joy Audit: Revisit the hobby audit we did. Buy that $10 packet of seeds or that specific yarn.
- The Unpublished Roll: Submit your application to the Electoral Commission to hide your address from public records.
- Future Planning: Look at your “Future-Self Visualization.” What is one tiny thing you can do this week to make that July 2026 version of you a reality?
Your 30-Day Support Network
Keep these numbers on speed dial (or saved under fake names like “Pizza Shop” if necessary):
- Women’s Refuge / Shine: 0800 733 843 / 0508 744 633 (24/7 Advocacy)
- 1737: Free text or call any time to talk to a trained counselor.
- Victim Support: 0800 842 846 (Practical help and court support)
A Note on the “Dip”: Around day 20, many people feel a “dip” where they miss the abuser or feel overwhelmed. This is not a sign you made a mistake; it is just your brain’s “familiarity” reflex. Hold fast to your Personal Bill of Rights.
